Hell of a Job

Couch game versus sabotage fast-paced
Created with Paul guyot and the cube team in 1 year
Developed with Unreal Engine 5
Context
Hell of a Job was created as part of the CUBE Club, a student society. The aim was to develop a complete game outside of the school curriculum during the academic year.
Pitch

In the depths of Hell, collect as many souls as you can and throw them at your opponent to sabotage them and satisfy your boss.

Hell of a Job is a fast-paced, one-on-one game, combining elements of dodgeball and handball. Collect souls. Make them yours by hitting your opponent. Use them to sabotage your opponent, and make sure they get fewer than you!
My involvement in the project
Team project conception, proposal of multiple designs followed by group discussions.

Creation of gameplay schemes, such as one-page designs, to communicate efficiently with other departments (artists, sound designers, developers…)

Game design: iterations around a quick, decision-making and sabotage game system.

Teaching rules while immersing players in the pace

Our main concern was to make an easy to learn, easy to play game.

The tutorial begins with players experimenting with the throw feature on their own. Here, they learn that they can aim and that their thrown Souls impact the environment.

Then, they are invited to face off by throwing one Soul at each other, still separated. They learn that the Souls kick back the opponent and turn their own color.

Finally, direct contact is encouraged by giving them access to a single soul. They learn the core gameplay of fighting for a point against each other.

Players also gain access to the Portal, which teaches them how to score and introduces them to the choices they will face: to score or to kick the opponent.
